Medical termination pregnancy (MTP) is a method of terminating pregnancy using medicines. It is feasible only up to 9 weeks of pregnancy, after that surgical termination takes over. It is one of the safest modes of terminating unwanted pregnancy. In this method, a set of pills named Mifepristone (Mifeprex) is given to the patient which can be taken orally or by injection. After this initial medication, another set of pills Misoprostol is given to the patient which can be taken orally or inserted vaginally at home or clinic. Generally the gap between these two medicines is 3 to 7 days. Along with the medicines, antibiotics are also given to prevent any kind of infection. This medication is preceded and followed by medical examination to determine positive pregnancy and positive abortion. The set of pills given is also known as abortion pills or RU 486 in medical terms.

Earlier the medication used for medical abortion was Methotrexate and Misoprostol together known as MTX. Methotrexate is used in the treatment of cancer and is very strong; hence it was replaced by Mifepristone. Contraceptive pill or the morning after pill is a birth control pill and is not medical treatment pregnancy. It is only effective before pregnancy.
